“Accent issue”: foreign accent syndrome following ischemic stroke

Background: Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is arare syndrome associated with altered speech rhythm and prosody, which listeners perceive as foreign; cerebrovascular accidents, tumors and multiple sclerosis are reported as possible causes of FAS. The pathophysiology of FAS is not yet understood. Case presentation: A 68-year-old Italian man was admitted to the EmergencyDepartment for non-fluent aphasia and dysarthria. Computed tomography (CT) scan did not show abnormalities; the patient was treated with systemic thrombolysis. Identification of Russian accented Finnish by native and non-native listeners with and without Finnish proficiency

 The study focuses on how different groups of listeners, that is native Finnish speakers (n = 18), non-native learners of Finnish (n = 12) and non-native non-learners of Finnish (n = 18), judge samples (n = 80) of Russian accented Finnish in an auditory experiment. The samples are read-aloud phrases of three Finnish speakers and three L1 Russian beginner learners of Finnish who were recorded three times at six-month intervals during their residence in Finland. En este trabajo describimos los rasgos melódicos de un grupo de italianos hablantes de español, con el método de análisis melódico del habla puesto a punto en el laboratorio de fonética de la Universidad de Barcelona. Nuestro objetivo es caracterizar su interlengua, con el fin de implementar la enseñanza de la pronunciación en este contexto. Hemos utilizado un corpus de 254 enunciados, de los cuales hemos seleccionado para el análisis 99 (49 interrogativas y 50 neutras). The paper deals with foreign accent performance in two popular comedy shows in Finnish television. Two different foreign accents of L2 Finnish – Russian and Swedish – were performed by two fictional characters: Svetlana Rönkkö, a Russian-born woman, and Tove Hansson, a Swedish speaking woman coming from the Åland Islands. Our main focus is on the empirical analysis of the phonetic features in these performances. The features are analysed as such, in relation to the empirically studied, “authentic”, features of L1 Russian and Swedish Finnishes. Kazoo training for L2 pronunciation practice and reduced foreign accentedness?

This paper presents a controlled pretest–training–posttest study on using a small membraphone instrument called kazoo for L2 pronunciation practice and reducing foreign accentedness. Learners were recorded for free speech before and after a six-week pronunciation and oral skills course including L2 prosody training with personal kazoos. A control group did not receive any kazoo training but did similar tasks in regular speech. Samples of all learners’ free speech before and after the course were rated for foreign accentedness by L1 speakers.
